The Daily Grind: Would Ship of Heroes have succeeded if Homecoming didn’t

Yes, we all know that Ship of Heroes sunsetting next week isn’t a big surprise. But as MOP’s Eliot has pointed out a couple of times in the past, the fact that City of Heroes still holds as the high water mark for superheroic MMORPGs is remarkable, and the fact that it came back — officially even — meant that SoH was probably doomed from the very start and likely contributed the most to its downfall. After all, why play an homage when the original still exists?

But would that really have been the case if Homecoming never came to be? Let’s dream up our best comic book-style alternate universe narrative for a moment: If Homecoming had never materialized whatsoever, do you think that Ship of Heroes would have had a better chance of surviving longer than a single year?
