A Change.org petition to save the Mass Effect franchise from being entirely mothballed has already soared part 200,000 signatures.

EA caused plenty of upset last week with the closure of Bioware, famed RPG developer responsible for a number of legendary games, like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Neverwinter Nights, Dragon Age and of course, the Mass Effect series. The next game in that series was also cancelled as part of that studio closure. Suffice it to say, fans were not at all happy with these developments.

Following the announcement, fans rallied, and a Change.org petition was set up by a chap named Joe Smith to demand EA do something about it, “urgently petitioning EA to take decisive action by committing to the continued development of Mass Effect.” Here’s the full petition:

Mass Effect holds a special place in the hearts of millions of players worldwide. Its rich and immersive sci-fi universe, with Commander Shepard leading the iconic crew aboard the Normandy, has captivated gamers for years. However, recent revelations have cast a shadow over its future. The decline in dedicated resources and ambiguous development plans from Electronic Arts (EA) threaten to leave this beloved series at a standstill, jeopardizing its incredible legacy.

Fans around the globe have invested thousands of hours exploring the galaxy, forming deep connections with its multifaceted characters and compelling storylines. It is a franchise that has transcended the typical gamer experience, creating a community that advocates for choice, individuality, and shared adventure. The potential cessation of new developments in this universe is a devastating prospect not only for fans but for the diversity of narrative-driven games as a whole.

Therefore, we are urgently petitioning EA to take decisive action by committing to the continued development of Mass Effect. This commitment requires proper funding, adequate staffing, and time allocation to maintain and advance the high standards the franchise is known for. Alternatively, EA could consider licensing the Mass Effect intellectual property (IP) to another studio that shares the passion and vision to keep it alive and allow it to flourish anew.

Both solutions offer a way forward. By ensuring the ongoing expansion and enhancement of the Mass Effect universe, EA would not only preserve a cherished piece of gaming history but also continue to contribute to the cultural and emotional impact it has on gamers worldwide.

Join us in this mission to secure the future of the Mass Effect universe by signing and sharing this petition. Let’s prominently illustrate to EA the significance of this iconic series and our collective demand for its continued journey across the stars. Sign today and keep the spirit of exploration alive!

Fans have reacted very strongly the Bioware’s closure and the next Mass Effect’s cancellation, particularly after supposed ex-EA staff leaked an unreleased internal trailer directly on Reddit earlier this week. Titled Mass Effect Universe, it certainly captured an excellent vibe, and it’s a shame the full game will likely never see the light of day.
